Knowsley Safari work experience in virtual reality

Students from specialist provision school, Alt Bridge, are the first to trial Knowsley Safari’s ‘virtual work experience’ careers programme.

The students, aged 13-18, used stateof-the-art virtual reality (VR) headsets to experience career opportunities at Knowsley Safari. The specially created ‘Let’s Explore the Visitor Economy’ workshops remove any practical limitations of traditional work experience, boosting confidence and enabling students with special education needs and disabilities to have a ‘taster’ of possible careers.

The programme is based on Knowsley Safari’s career opportunities. Students can experience a variety of the Safari Park’s careers in a virtual reality.

Ellie Hill, learning and discovery manager at Knowsley Safari, said:

“It’s important for us to make career opportunities at the Safari as accessible as possible.

“We can showcase the huge range of opportunities on offer to even more young people.”

Claire Caddick, operational career’s hub lead at Growth Platform, said: “We’re creating a series of VR work experiences to enable children in Liverpool City Region to step into virtual worlds and realise the wide range of career opportunities available to them.”

Over 100 students at Alt Bridge have partaken in the VR careers experience.

Paula Beasley, careers lead at Alt

Bridge School said: “It’s also been valuable in raising awareness of the wide range of jobs that exist within the Visitor Economy and especially at the Safari.”

The ‘Let’s Explore the Visitor Economy’ VR work experience programme is open to schools in the Liverpool city region. Schools interested in applying should contact: claire.caddick@growthplatform.org.
