Liverpool John Moores University celebrates bicentenary

In July 1823 an institution was founded which became the catalyst for an educational revolution in the city of Liverpool.

The Liverpool Mechanics and Apprentices Library evolved into the Mechanics Institute and, through mergers and collaborative partnerships, eventually led to the establishment of Liverpool John Moores University in 1992.

The original mechanics, LJMU’s first students, were the people who made the industrial revolution work.

The Mechanics Institute was the start of a movement combining intellectual rigour with practical skills, forging links between industry and technology; delivering learning with impact and promoting civic pride and social courage as an intrinsic set of values.

And today the university remain true to this heritage. LJMU’s mission, rooted in its place in the city, the academic endeavours of its staff and students and the positive impact it has in its communities, continues to reflect its ongoing commitment to the transforming power of education and to the themes of innovation, aspiration and inspiration that have echoed across the last 200 years.

There are a packed calendar of events and activities planned throughout 2023, providing opportunities for its students, staff and community to be part of its bicentenary celebrations.

From high profile Roscoe lectures and international academic conferences to campus-wide exhibitions, student projects and alumni homecomings; 2023 will be a year showcasing the best of LJMU and a fitting launch to its new strategic plan.
