Education in the Community

In 2022, Edge Hill University helped to raise money for Manchester Children’s Hospital and collected for local food banks.

Like education, charity takes place all year round. Edge Hill’s scholarship winners, a group of students who go above and beyond in a wide range of ways, are an example of this. They were rewarded with an awards evening and financial support to help with their education.

Many of the winners came from the Faculty of Education and are aspiring teachers. The group included a large number of scouts and guides, students volunteering in the community, and a computer whiz who shares her skills with girls in sub-Saharan Africa.

The scholars are an example of charity, kindness and community spirit. As scouts and guides, students teach life skills to children, giving them confidence and contributing to their educational journey. Many students get their first taste of teaching and go into education.

Scholarship winner and PGCE student, Frances Agba, has been working with young women in sub-Saharan Africa, teaching them tech skills, English, and offering them careers advice. This gives the women a way to change their life chances.

The students’ achievements and commitment to helping others shows clearly that charity, community and education all go hand in hand. Often an education is one of the best things to give to another person.

In these difficult times, with challenges all around, examples of charity work, volunteering and people doing good in the community have never been more important.
