BIG Little Library Book Flood

The multi award-winning community venture, The BIG Little Library held its annual Book Flood in December.

In Iceland, books are exchanged on Christmas Eve, and people spend the rest of the night reading.

The Christmas tradition is known as Jolabokaflod, which means ‘Christmas book flood’.

It dates back to World War Two, when foreign imports were restricted but paper was relatively inexpensive.

Local and national publishers and authors donated brand new books of all ages to The

BIG Little Library initiative, in order to support and encourage reading in the local community. These include:

• Arts Groupie

• Book Trust

• Read for Good

• Comics Youth

• Liverpool Learning Partnership

• National Literacy Trust

• News From Nowhere

• Skywriters

• Splitperspectivz

The books are for all ages, from babies up to young adults. The goal was for the event to help ease the monetary pressure of Christmas and to start a tradition with families and friends to give and receive books at Christmas and spread the love of reading for pleasure.

The BIG Little Library gave away over 1360 brand new books, doubling last year’s amount.
