Mark Power confirmed as vice-chancellor and chief executive of Liverpool John Moores University

Mark Power has been appointed as Liverpool John Moores University’s fifth vice-chancellor and chief executive.

The chair of the board,

Mike Parker, led an extensive process to determine the future leadership of the university and following a formal board consultation and interview, appointed Mark Power with immediate effect.

Mike Parker said: “Mark is an exceptional individual with a remarkable track record as an agile and determined leader, focused on the best outcomes for our students and staff.

“Throughout his career he has developed a sharp understanding of the sector, the respect of his peers in higher education and the leaders in the city region; he also carries with him the confidence of our staff and our extended university community.

“He will be a fantastic vicechancellor and chief executive for Liverpool John Moores University, his story is compelling and inspirational, we couldn’t have a better person to lead us into the next stage of our development.”

Mark Power has held significant roles at every level within the university during his career with LJMU and has become a specialist in higher education management. Most recently he has been registrar and chief operating officer and led the university’s response to the pandemic.

Mark said: “I am incredibly proud of LJMU and honoured to be leading such a fantastic and impactful institution. I have spent my entire professional career at LJMU and I have seen for myself, with profound and moving effect, the difference we can make to everyone who has a connection with us.

“I know that together we can realise our collective ambitions to make students the heart of everything we do at LJMU.

“Our staff, academic and professional services are second to none; we have an engaged and active academic community who immerse themselves with their disciplinary expertise and translate their outstanding research and scholarship into a remarkable curriculum with real life experience for our students.

“Make no mistake, this is not a moment to pause. We have a tremendous opportunity to shape our future with a new strategic approach embracing a courageous, innovative and inclusive way of doing things.

“I am determined to drive the university forward and am very excited about where we can take LJMU for our students, for our staff and for our extended community.”
