Students at SENDSCOPE arrived in style for day one of school in their new school uniforms, which they designed themselves during the summer term. SENDSCOPE is committed to ensuring the needs of students are met and, after consultation with the students, found that traditional school uniforms often created sensory issues. Its motto ‘SENDSCOPE family’ has been truly encapsulated in the design experience. SENDSCOPE students listed materials and styles they felt most comfortable wearing and these were then sourced and made by a member of the SENDSCOPE team to keep the rising costs of uniform to a minimum. The team effort continued as all staff delivered uniforms to students over summer which offered a unique opportunity to check in with students and families during the break. Miss Hubbard, class teacher, said: “It was a wonderful experience working with the students to design a uniform that removed not only a barrier to learning but a barrier to attending school.” SENDSCOPE student Lewis said: “I really like my new uniform and don’t mind wearing it as I designed it myself. My new school jumper is soft and comfortable.” It’s not only the students that have benefited from a new uniform. Miss Hubbard has also created a staff section, where staff can choose from a selection of items for workwear should they choose. Mrs Bebbington, principal of SENDSCOPE, said: “We are so proud to see our students dressed smartly in uniforms that it is evident they feel comfortable in. They are so happy and we are delighted that they have had a voice in this process, the staff seem very happy too!” This term, SENDSCOPE will continue to develop its uniform selection, in co-production with students, staff and parents in order to offer a broader selection of items for students to choose from.
